Ip Man 4: The Finale is a 2019 martial arts film directed by Wilson Yip and produced by Raymond Wong. It is the fourth and final film in the Ip Man film series, which is loosely based on the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster of the same name, and features Donnie Yen in the title role.

However, Hartman manages to convince the unit's commanding officer of kung fu's potential use, and is permitted to film the Mid-Autumn Festival happening at Chinatown for research purposes, infuriating Geddes, who instructs Frater to challenge the grandmasters at the festival. Frater easily defeats 3 of the grandmasters before Ip intervenes and beats him badly. Meanwhile, Wan, who was supposed to be present at the festival, is arrested by the INS. Upon seeing Frater in the hospital, Geddes barges into the CBA, and uses his strength and karate prowess to brutally defeat all the grandmasters present. He then threatens Walters into releasing Wan into Marine custody before bringing Wan into the camp to fight him. Due to a tip-off by a subordinate of Walter and another student of Lee named Billy, Ip and Gen help the Association evacuate by the time the INS conducts its raid. Lee provides refuge for the Association, earning their respect.


Wan prepares the referral letter for Ip, but Ip turns it down, having decided against moving to America. Ip returns to Hong Kong and accepts the fact that Ching likes martial arts. A weary but determined Ip instructs his son to film him as he demonstrates Wing Chun on a wooden dummy.


On 30 September 2016, Donnie Yen (who portrayed the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in three films) announced that he and series director Wilson Yip would return for the fourth film in the series.[10] Writer Edmond Wong also returned.[11] Producer Raymond Wong said he paid Yen "a hefty amount of money" to return for the fourth film.[12] Principal photography began in April 2018,[13] and ended that July.[14][15] Filming locations included China,[16] Pensby High School, Crosby Beach and Preston, Lancashire.[17] In September 2019, Donnie Yen said Ip Man 4 would be the last film in the series.[18]


Ip Man 4: The Finale was released on December 20, 2019.[19] The film had a limited release on December 25, 2019, in the United States distributed by Well Go USA.[20] It was released by CMC Pictures in Australia and New Zealand on 20 December 2019.[21]


According to the Malaysian newspaper The Star, the movie was the highest grossing Chinese film of all time in the country while according to Shine.cn, the movie was the third highest grossing Chinese film in North America in five years.[24][25]


As of March 2020, the film has grossed over $239 million worldwide,[4][26] Taiwan box office is NT$185 million[27] (US6.15 million),[28] As of Jan 5, Singapore box office is US$6.74,[29] Malaysia box office over RM 36 million (US8.6 million),[30] making over $197.2 million in Mainland China.[3]


During the 2019 Hong Kong protests, protesters urged a boycott of the film, citing the pro-Beijing stances of actors Donnie Yen and Danny Chan and producer Raymond Wong. Protesters actively spoiled the film on social media in both English and Chinese.[31]


Ip Man was directed by Wilson Yip and written by Edmond Wong.[2] It was Raymond Wong's idea to develop a biographical film about Wing Chun master Ip Man. Principal photography began in Shanghai in March 2008 and ended in August. The film was released in Hong Kong on 18 December 2008 by Mandarin Films, and earned around US$21.8 million against the US$11.7 million budget.[3] Donnie Yen portrayed the role of Ip Man in the film, set in the 1930s, focuses on events in Ip's life in the city of Foshan during the Sino-Japanese War.[2]


The sequel is set in 1949, when Ip Man moved to Hong Kong and attempts to promote Wing Chun in the region.[4] It was intended to focus on the relationship between Ip Man and his most famed disciple Bruce Lee.[5] The film was directed by Yip and written by Edmond Wong, while Raymond Wong produced the film and was released in Hong Kong on 29 April 2010 by Mandarin Films. The film grossed more than $50 million against the budget of $12.9 million.[6][7]


Principal photography began in Shanghai on 25 March 2015, which Yip is again directing the film based on the script by Wong.[8] Donnie Yen is again portraying the role of Ip Man, along with him Mike Tyson is also playing a role of a street fighter.[8] Bruce Lee's character was initially supposed to be featured in CGI, because the producers could not find an actor who could portray Lee convincingly,[8] but Danny Chan was eventually cast in the role.[9]


On 30 September 2016, Yen announced via Facebook that he and Wilson Yip would continue the franchise with Ip Man 4.[11] The film began production in April 2018 and ended in July of the same year. It was released on 20 December 2019, and portrays Ip Man traveling to San Francisco to secure a spot for his son at a local school. Meanwhile, he crosses paths with his student, Bruce Lee, who had set up a Wing Chun school there.


In April 2019, it was reported that Max Zhang is set to reprise his role in a sequel to Master Z: Ip Man Legacy. The sequel is reported to be taking a budget cut, down to $13 million, from the first film's budget of $28 million.[12][13]


Ip Man Trilogy, a Blu-ray compilation that features the first three films in the series, was released by Well Go USA in November 2016. The Blu-ray also includes special features such as deleted scenes, "behind-the-scenes" featurette and interviews with Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson.[33] 2ff7e9595c
